Trojans Drop Doubleheader at 32nd-Ranked UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Anderson baseball team opened the 2013 campaign by dropping a doubleheader to 32nd-ranked UNC Pembroke, 17-0 and 7-1, Saturday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The season-opening twinbill for both teams saw UNC Pembroke take a 4-0 lead after two innings in the first contest, then erupt for eight earned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the game open.

Anderson was out-hit 23-3 in the contest, with Trojan shortstop Brett Cash notching a pair of singles. AU right-fielder Paul Como added an eighth-inning single.

The Braves worked four Trojan hurlers for 12 earned runs, with sophomore Spencer Earle suffering the setback. UNC Pembroke's Ethan Carter earned the win, tossing seven innings.

Anderson starter Thomas Goodman tossed a complete game in the nightcap, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits over six innings. Freshman Stephen McKnight notched a pair of singles for the Trojans, while freshman Stephen Cooper and junior Ben Pendleton added back-to-back singles in the third inning.

The Braves now lead the all-time series, 23-6, and have won 18 of the last 21 in the series, including a current 10-game win streak.

The Trojans and Braves will wrap up their three-game series with a Sunday afternoon matchup slated to start at 1 p.m.
