DUE WEST, S.C. - Senior Erick Sanderson went 3-for-4 on the
afternoon and catcher Jonathan Zalud scored what proved to be the
winning run on Paul Liggett's fly out in the fifth inning as the
Anderson baseball team wrapped up its five-game road swing by
topping Erskine, 4-3, in nonconference action Wednesday afternoon
at Grier Field.
Anderson (5-12) halted a six-game skid and avenged an earlier
8-3 setback at the hands of the Flying Fleet, while also snapping a
four-game losing streak at the hands of the Fleet. Erskine fell to
10-4 and has dropped two of its last three decisions.
Sanderson, the designated hitter, ripped a pair of doubles and a
single, while also crossing the plate once. Junior Shawn
Delmontagne was 2-for-4, including a double and scored once.
Erskine grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the
bottom of the first inning on Drew Willingham's two-RBI triple with
one out. Anderson answered with a solo run in the top of the second
inning when Sanderson led off the inning with a double and scored
when Nathan Galliford singled.
The Fleet added a run in the third to take a 3-1 edge, but the
Trojans' Steven Cooper led off the fourth by blasting his first
home run of the season to pull AU within 3-2 and the Trojans posted
a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Delmontagne led off
the inning with a single and moved into scoring position when Zalud
followed with a single. Freshman Chris Ayers singled to load the
bases with no outs and Delmontagne scored when Josh Hickman bounced
out to short. Zalud scored the game-winner on Liggett's fly to
center.
Sanderson led off the sixth with his second double of the
afternoon and moved to third on Galliford's grounder to second, but
the Trojans were unable to build on their lead.
A trio of AU hurlers allowed just three Fleet baserunners over
the final four innings, as junior Thomas Goodman (1-1) tossed seven
complete innings, while surrendering three runs off seven hits. The
right-hander struck out four and walked three. Kyle Francis threw
one inning of relief and surrendered just one hit, while Landon
Beck earned his third save of the season by going the ninth inning
and giving up just one hit, as well.
Anderson begins a four-game homestand by playing host to Catawba
this weekend. The Trojans and Indians will get the three-game South
Atlantic Conference series underway on Friday with first-pitch at
Memorial Stadium slated for 6 p.m.
