DUE WEST, S.C. - After a balanced scoring attack, Anderson
University women's basketball cruised to a 78-63 victory and earned
a Beville Cup point over Erskine in non-conference action Tuesday
night at Belk Arena.
With the victory, first year head coach Jimmy Garrity earns his
first winning record at the helm of the program, as the Trojans
move to 2-1 on the season. The win also increases a winning streak
over the Flying Fleet to 12-straight games, which includes 16 of
its last 17 meetings. Following the game, Anderson increased the
Beville Cup lead to 6-0, needing just eight points to clinch the
return of the Cup.
"We talked about the importance of the Beville Cup and what it
means to Anderson University," AU head coach Jimmy Garrity said.
"I'm happy we came away with our point for AU."
The balanced scoring attack was led by sophomore Jennifer
Monroe, who recorded career-highs in points with 12 and rebounds
with eight. Monroe, who came on as a substitute was needed after AU
committed 29 fouls for the game. The junior duo of Jasmine Franklin
and Lesley Woods each posted 10 points, as freshman Alexis Dillard,
who earned her first start of her collegiate career, posted 13
rebounds, one more than her original season-high of 12.
Anderson got off the blocks quickly in the opening half as the
Trojans began the game with a 12-4 run, highlighted by a Franklin
jumped that forced a Fleet timeout. The remainder of the half was
in favor of the Trojans who took the opening half, 39-22, their
highest scoring output for a first half on the young season.
Leading the way in the first half was a balanced attack of Katie
Davis, Sierra Simpson, Emily Willoughby and Madison Floyd who all
posted six points for the half. Woods closely follow with five.
AU kept up the momentum in the second half, as the Trojans took
its biggest lead of the game of 23 when Monroe hit a jumper with
7:12 left in the half. Erskine would eventually close the gap to 15
with under a minute remaining, its lowest deficit since the 4:48
mark in the second half.
"I was extremely proud of our effort tonight against a very good
Erskine team," Garrity said. "It was a 'grind it out' type game.
Our girls responded with everyone playing double digit minutes and
it was a great team win."
Simpson, who was in foul trouble for the majority of the game,
finished with seven points, the first time of the season she has
been unable to record double-digit points.
Erskine was led by post player Tara Potter, who average nine
points per game last season, with 21 points and eight rebounds on
the night. Freshman Kristin Giles scored 12 points in her
collegiate debut.
Anderson has a quick turnaround before its home-opener on
Thursday against CIAA opponent, Winston-Salem. Tip-off from the
Abney Athletic Center is set for 6 p.m.
