DUE WEST, S.C. - The Anderson University baseball team outhit
Erskine, but dropped a 10-4 decision to the archrival Flying Fleet
in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Grier Field.
Anderson (3-10) suffered its seventh consecutive setback, while
the Flying Fleet (5-4) snapped a two-game skid with the win. The
Trojans outhit Erskine, 14-12, on the afternoon, but the Fleet
scored 10 runs on their 12 hits
Sophomore outfielder Zack Reeves led the Trojans offensively,
finishing the afternoon 4-for-5, with his first home run of the
season coming in the eighth inning. Senior catcher Brett Scarberry
finished the afternoon with a pair of singles in five at-bats,
while senior Ryan Kirkland also recorded two singles.
Tayler Ramsey (1-0) picked up the win allowing no runs on two
hits in one and a third inning of relief, while freshman JT
Trujillo (1-1) absorbed the loss for AU, going six full innings and
giving up eight runs off 10 hits.
The Trojans got on the board first when Reeves scored on a
single by Scarberry in the top half of the first inning. But
Erskine answered with four in the bottom half of the inning, as the
Fleet loaded the bases and with one out Chase Corn reached on an
error to tie the game up. Luke Danielewicz reached on a fielder's
choice to score a run and Zac McCarthy hit a double to score two
more and make it a 4-1 game after one inning. Both teams added a
run in the second inning and the Trojans added one more in the
third to make it a 5-3 game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Erskine's McCarthy led off with his
second double of the game followed by an infield single by Phillip
Herring. Cameron Yost drew a walk to load the bases and Josh Purvis
followed with a double to right field that scored McCarthy and
Herring. Willingham singled to left to score Yost and give the
Fleet a five-run lead.
Trailing 8-3 in the top of the eighth, Reeves connected on a
solo home run to left to make it a four-run game. But Willingham
countered with a two-run homer in the bottom half to finish out the
scoring.
Willingham led the Fleet offense, going 3-5 with a home run and
three RBI's, while McCarthy and Purvis both had two hits and two
runs batted in.
Anderson gets back into South Atlantic Conference action with a
three-game series at Lincoln Memorial, beginning at 4 p.m. on
Friday.
