PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Anderson University baseball team had three
players record multiple hits on the afternoon but managed to plate
just four runs as the Trojans dropped a twinbill, 8-3 and 6-1 to
UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
The opening game of the day saw UNCP (3-0) send eight batters to
the plate in chalking up a four-run first inning, while Anderson
(1-3) took advantage of three Braves errors to cut the deficit in
half with two unearned runs in the third.
The homestanding Braves countered with four more runs in the
bottom of the fourth and while AU posted a solo run in the ninth,
it wasn't enough as the Trojans dropped the five-run decision.
Anderson got two hits apiece from Thomas Padro and Blake May,
but were limited to just six hits in the outing, including just
three singles over the last four innings.
The Braves got two hits from a trio of players, including Kyle
Adair who drove in a pair of runs and scored once on a 2-for-4
plate performance. Keith Whitman doubled for the second-straight
game to earmark a 2-for-3 hitting line with a run scored, while
newcomer Brad Bridgeman singled, doubled and scored twice on a
2-for-5 day at the plate.
Brad Isom (1-0) struck out a career-best eight batters and
limited the Trojans to four hits and two unearned runs over seven
innings of work to pick up his first career victory in his ninth
collegiate appearance. Reliever Weston Sherrill struck out three
and allowed two hits in the eighth and ninth innings, but was not
awarded a decision.
Anderson starter Ben Roberts (0-1) allowed nine hits, three
walks and eight runs in absorbing the loss. Three other AU hurlers
- Marsh Kowalski, Justin Templeton and Andrew Johnson - combined to
no-hit the Braves over the final four innings.
UNCP starter Josh Bagley shut the Trojans down offensively for 5
2/3 innings in the nightcap, while the Braves recorded double-digit
hits for the second time in the series en route to the 6-1 triumph
in the series finale.
Tony Price and Zach Reeves recorded a single and a double,
respectively for the Trojans' two hits of the game, with Reeves
scoring after doubling with one out in the sixth.
Bagley (1-0) sat down each of the first 14 batters he faced
before Price came through with his two-out fifth inning single.
Erick Sanderson (0-1) allowed nine hits and five earned runs in
four innings on the mound to take the loss.
The Trojans visit Augusta State on Tuesay before opening a
four-game homestand when Southern Wesleyan invades Anderson
Memorial Stadium for a midweek contest on Wednesday. First-pitch is
slated for 2 p.m.
