MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Anderson softball team split with
Chowan University on Saturday, taking the first game 14-4 and
dropping the second game 3-2. Brooke Lucas paced the Trojans in the
first game with her game-high four RBI. The second game proved to
be more of a defensive match-up as AU senior Casey Deer tossed yet
another complete game.
In the first game, Anderson (3-2) was able to build on their
recent success against Shaw on Friday with another explosion on
offense.
Game #1
Anderson 14, Chowan 4
In just the third at-bat of the contest, freshman Abby Child
sent a solo home run over the left-field fence, giving the Trojans
a 1-0 advantage. One inning later Charlotte Seiber crossed the
plate to increase the lead to 2-0 after a throwing error proved
costly for Chowan.
Two Trojan errors in the Chowan third allowed the Hawks to cut
into the Trojans' lead and make the contest 2-1. An inning later
the Anderson bats started to sizzle as four hits equated four runs.
With one out in the inning, after two Trojan walks and a double,
Seiber came to the plate with the bases loaded. The freshman
recorded an RBI single to make the score 3-1. One batter later,
Kinsley Durham hit another RBI single to score Laura Jansky and
increase the Trojans lead to 4-1. Brooke Lucas came to the plate
next and hit another single, allowing two base runners to score,
boosting the Trojans' advantage to 6-1.
The fourth inning proved to be costly for Chowan as the Hawks
allowed eight runs off eight hits. With one out in the inning,
Seiber came to the plate with another opportunity to add to her RBI
total. She did so by hitting a single that enabled Abby Child to
score. One batter later, leading 8-1, Brooke Lucas struck again
with a single that sent two base runners across the plate. Three
consecutive RBI singles would come next from Lyndsey Huitt,
Danielle Swygert and Emily Monteith to put the game out of reach at
14-1.
Chowan came back to score three runs in the bottom part of the
inning but not before allowing the Trojans to win the 14-4 contest
in just five innings.
Lucas went two-for-three with four RBI, while Seiber led the
Trojans with three runs scored, going two-for-two with a walk and
two RBI.
Casey Deer went all five innings for the Trojans, giving up
three earned runs off six hits. The Chowan pitching staff gave up
14 runs and 13 hits in five innings of work.
Game #2
Chowan 3, Anderson 2
Led by pitcher Christie Wright, Chowan was able to pick up the
3-2 win in what turned out to be a defensive game.
With one out in the first inning of play Gorman hit an RBI
double to make the score 1-0. One inning later Alex Allen brought
in a run on a fielder's choice to make the score 2-0.
The Trojans would strike back in the third when Emily Monteith
hit a two run home run over the center field wall. The senior's
blast evened up the score at two.
In the sixth inning, Alex Allen came to the plate with runners
on second and third. The junior would hit a single down the left-
field line to give Chowan a 3-2 lead. With their last opportunity
to win the game, the Trojans went 1-2-3 as Chowan secured the
win.
Deer made her second start of the day, going all six innings for
Anderson. The senior gave up three runs off of three hits.
Senior Emily Monteith led the Trojans with two RBI, going
one-for-three at the plate.
