ANDERSON, S.C. - With six players reaching double figures in the
scoring column, Anderson closed out a brief two-game homestand by
outpacing North Greenville, 99-91, in non-conference men's
basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic
Center.
Sophomore guard Chandler Hash scored eight points in a
two-minute span late in the game and the Trojans connected on
13-of-16 free throws inside the final two minutes, as Anderson won
its second straight to improve to 3-1 on the season, while North
Greenville slipped to 2-1.
The Trojans trailed just once early, 6-4, before junior guard
C.J. Gleaton dropped in a layup to tie the contest for the only
time of the night, with 17:08 remaining in the first half. Anderson
pushed out to an eight-point lead on the strength of a 10-2
outburst, as Hash scored five of his 16 points during the run.
Anderson stretched the lead to double figures, 24-13, on veteran
guard Nick Trull's jumper, while North Greenville countered with
six unanswered points to climb back within 24-19 with 11:20 on the
clock. But AU responded by regaining the double-digit advantage and
leading by 15 points at the 4:22 mark..
Trull drained back-to-back 3-pointers under pressure midway
through the second half to boost the Trojans to their biggest lead
of the contest, 71-55, but the Crusaders refused to go away
quietly, with center Paul Harrison's offensive rebound and basket
trimming AU's lead to 75-68 with 7:16 left in the game.
With the Trojans leading by eight, Hash hit a driving layup
while drawing a foul and hit the ensuing free throw to give AU a
79-68 cushion and his trey with just under four minutes on the
clock pushed the lead back to 13 points.
The Crusaders connected on four 3-pointers in the final 2:29,
but Anderson countered with their free throw accuracy, connecting
on 36-of-43 (83.7%) on the night.
Senior Stephen Cobb led the Trojans with 17 points and seven
rebounds, while Hash added 16 points. Trull contributed 15 points
and Taylor Shugart scored 14, with Gleaton notching 12 points and
dishing out five assists and grabbing six steals. Senior Tyrell
McDowell chipped in 10 points and five assists on the night.
North Greenville's Chris dean lead all scorers with 24 points,
with Paul Harrison posting a double-double with 15 points and 15
rebounds.
Anderson goes on the road to face Georgia College on Tuesday in
Milledgeville, Ga., with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m. versus the
Bobcats.
