Trojan Volleyball Sweeps Pair of Matches

ANDERSON, S.C. - Using a balanced offensive attack, the Anderson University volleyball team swept a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center, blanking league-foe Brevard 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-15) then closing the afternoon with a 3-1, (25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 25-19) win past Francis Marion.

Anderson (7-16, 3-7 SAC) snapped an eight-match skid with the pair of wins, while Brevard (4-17, 0-12 SAC) suffered its eighth consecutive setback with the losses to AU and Francis Marion. FMU (7-12) split its two contests, downing the Tornados and falling to Anderson.

Anderson took an early lead against the Tornados, but Brevard stayed close and took its first lead at 10-9. The opening sat saw six more tie scores before the Trojans scored four unanswered points to gain a lead they would not relinquish and holding off Brevard for the win.

The Trojans reeled off six unanswered points early in the second frame to gain some breathing room before building a double-digit lead at 17-7 and earning their second consecutive set.

AU posted a 5-0 outburst midway through the third and final set to break it open and claim the 25-15 win.

Anderson snapped a 19-19 tie in the opening set versus Francis Marion and scored six of the final nine points en route to the narrow win, then jumped out to an early lead in the second set. The Trojans built a double-digit cushion while easing to the win.

The Patriots rallied for a third-set victory, but AU responded by taking another early lead in the fourth set and holding off FMU for the win.

Freshman Meghan Cautero dished out 70 assists and recorded 18 digs on the afternoon, while senior Marlie Bryant added 18 digs and 14 kills. Freshman Shannon Gillespie knocked down a team-high 24 kills and came up with 24 digs on the defensive side. Junior Tiffany Rowe recorded 11 kills and 10 total blocks. Freshman Kalie Endres notched 46 digs and Alix Hooker added 25.recorded six digs.

Anderson has a five-day layoff before going on the road to face Carson-Newman on Friday. First-serve is slated for 7 p.m. versus the Eagles in Jefferson City, Tenn.
