BELMONT, N.C. -- The Anderson softball team (22-16 overall, 12-6
Conference Carolinas) split their third straight conference
doubleheader on Tuesday, falling to Belmont Abbey (20-24, 11-9) in
the first game 4-1, and winning the second match-up, 2-0. In the
first game, Belmont Abbey struck first in the opening inning when
three singles propelled them to a 1-0 lead. The Trojans matched the
score in the third inning, which was started off by a Meredith Knox
single. The next batter, Emily Monteith, hit another single and a
fielding error allowed Knox to score. In the bottom half of the
third inning, a lead-off single, followed by a stolen base, allowed
the Crusaders to again notch a single run on the scoreboard and
retake the lead. Belmont Abbey would keep the Trojans offense in
check for the remainder of the match up, allowing AU to record two
hits but score no runs in the final four innings of play. Casey
Deer (8-6) pitched a complete game for the Trojans, giving up four
runs off 10 hits. Elisa Sebastyan and Monteith both went
two-for-three. In game two, Katie Van Gieson (7-3) pitched
brilliantly as she got back on track, shutting out the Crusaders.
The same went for Kim Anders, the freshman pitcher who took the
mound for Belmont Abbey, as the righty only gave up one earned run
off three hits. Zero's filled the scoreboard until the seventh
inning, which started out with Kinsley Durham reaching on an error
by Belmont Abbey. Cameron White walked two batters later to put
base runners on at second and third. With two outs, Elisa Sebastyan
singled to score Durham and put the Trojans up 1-0. The next
batter, Montieth, singled to bring home White to give the Trojans
the 2-0 lead. The Trojans take the field again on Wednesday as they
take on Southern Wesleyan in a non-conference doubleheader. The
first game will get underway at 5 pm at Smether's field. Game 1 Box
