ANDERSON, S.C. -- For the second time in as many days, the
Anderson softball team (21-15 overall, 11-5 Conference Carolinas)
split a Conference Carolinas' doubleheader, losing the first game
6-3 versus Barton (15-26 overall, 6-12), and winning the second
game 7-2. In the first inning of game one the Bulldogs struck first
with one run off of a pair of singles from Jessica McFadden and
Stacy Wade to take the early lead 1-0. In the bottom half of the
inning the Trojans matched when Emily Monteith brought home Elisa
Sebastyan thanks to her RBI triple to tie the game back up at 1-1,
the junior's 39th RBI on the season. Amber Duncan led off the
bottom of the second inning with a walk. Two batters later brought
up Cameron White who smashed a two-run home run over the left field
wall to put the Trojans up 3-1, the catchers 14th RBI on the
season. The Bulldogs used three consecutive singles in the top of
the third inning to drive in one run and cut the Trojans lead to
3-2. In the fifth inning Barton used four hits to post four runs on
the scoreboard with the help of an error from the Trojans. The
Trojans suffered by committing five errors during game one. The
starter for the Trojans, Katie Van Gieson (6-3), went four innings
giving up six runs off eight hits. Appearing in relief, Donya Cobb
pitched sensationally giving up no runs and one hit. The Trojans
jumped on the scoreboard quickly in the second game after Meredith
Knox hit a solo home run over the left field wall, the senior's
ninth home run on the season put Anderson up 1-0. The Trojans
attacked again in the second inning with another long ball from
Elisa Sebastyan to increase the Trojans lead to 2-0. The Bulldogs
answered in the top of the third with three singles that
contributed in tying the game up at 2-2. In the bottom half of the
inning the Trojans would do some answering themselves when Amber
Sutherland was allowed to reach on an error by the Barton infield.
One batter later a Meredith Knox single paved the way to Emily
Monteith hitting her 13th homer on the season, a three-run jack
that put the Trojans up 5-2. In the fifth the Trojans would
continue their offensive assault as Lindsey Huitt and Meredith Knox
started the inning with a pair of singles. Two batters later Elisa
Sebastyan tacked on two more runs for the Trojans, the single would
bring her total to 35 RBI on the season and put Anderson up 7-2.
Casey Deer (8-5) grabbed her second win in two days as she put up
all-zeros on the board with the exception of the third inning. The
junior notched the complete game and only gave up two runs off of
four Barton hits. The Trojans will take the field again on Tuesday
as they take on Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas
doubleheader. The first game will start at 2 pm and will be the
Trojans first road contest in over two weeks.
