ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson softball team fell to 8-6 on the
season Thursday afternoon when the Trojans were swept by Mars Hill,
7-1 and 12-3 at Smethers Field. Mars Hill wasted little time
getting on the board in the first game when four hits found the
Lions leading Anderson 4-0 after the first inning. Mars Hill
continued to tack on runs in the second and third innings after
errors and control problems left the Trojans at a 7-0 disadvantage.
From the fourth inning on the Trojans' pitchers found a groove,
putting zeros up on the board and finishing out the game on a
strong note, but one Anderson run wouldn't be enough on the
afternoon. AU's Kayla Hipp worked two innings of relief for the
Trojans, striking out one and blanking the scoreboard in the sixth
and seventh innings. Emily Monteith went two-for-three, recording
the lone RBI for the Trojans. The RBI gave Monteith at 25 on the
season. Casey Deer went five innings and absorbed the loss in game
one, dropping her to 2-2 on the season, while Lions' pitcher Tara
West recorded ten strikeouts in her complete game. Game two began
more promising for the Trojans during the second inning when the
Trojans managed three runs on two hits and two costly MHC errors,
leaving AU looking at a 8-3 deficit. The Trojans remained in
striking distance and knocked on the door a few times until the
sixth inning when the Lions put the game away off on four hits,
tallying three more runs to their total. Alex Waldrop, who received
the loss for the Trojans, was knocked out of the game when a line
drive stuck her in the leg. Meredith Knox went two-for-two for
Anderson and Lyndsey Huitt was one-for-two, scoring one of the
three Trojan runs. Anderson takes the field again tomorrow against
Florida Southern at Noon when they play in the West Georgia
Tournament. Game 1 Game 2 Season
