GREENWOOD, S.C. -- The Anderson baseball team wrapped up its
nine-game road trip with a 15-4 setback to Lander in non-conference
action Tuesday night at Legion Field. Lander improved to 17-9 on
the season, including 16-1 at home, and extended its win streak to
four in a row, while Anderson dipped to 10-22 overall. The Trojans
threatened in their first at-bat, as Blake May and Ryan Saxon drew
back-to-back one-out walks, but AU was unable to capitalize and
fell behind, 8-0, after two innings as the Bearcats posted the
eight runs on nine hits in the opening two frames. Anderson
countered with three runs in the third, as senior Derek Hipp led
off with a single and moved to second when the ball got away from
Bearcats' catcher Joe Tebaldi. Designated hitter Matt Hill followed
by reaching on an error while Hipp went to third on the play and
scored moments later as May grounded out to third. With one out,
Saxon added a single to put runners on the corners and Ryan
Kirkland doubled to score Hill, with Saxon going to third. The
Trojan second baseman crossed the plate after Erick Sanderson
earned a walk and was thrown out going to second as Jonathan Romano
grounded into a fielder's choice. Neither team was able to generate
any offense in the fourth and fifth innings, as Anderson junior
right-hander Marsh Kowalski and the Lander duo of Christian Brown
and Ben Runyon clamped down on the mound and refused to surrender
any hits over the two- inning span. The Bearcats threatened in the
home half of the sixth as the first four Bearcat batters reached
base and LU scored four unearned runs to open a 12-3 lead after six
full innings. The Trojans refused to surrender, loading the bases
with two out in the seventh but were unable to capitalize, and
Lander added three more runs in the seventh. Anderson's Saxon
opened the ninth by laying down a bunt for his team-high third hit
of the night and came around to score the game's final run on a
wild pitch with two outs. Saxon finished the night 3-for-4 and a
walk, as Hipp, Kirkland and Romano each added a hit, while May,
Kirkland and Romano recorded RBIs. Brett Campbell suffered the
loss, slipping to 1-3 on the season while giving up six runs, all
earned, in 1 1/3 innings of work. Anderson returns home Thursday
for the first time since March 9, when the Trojans welcome Southern
Wesleyan to Anderson Memorial Stadium. First-pitch is scheduled for
6 p.m. Box
