Trojans Drop Doubleheader to UNC Pembroke

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson baseball team dropped a heartbreaking, 10-9, extra-inning decision in the first game of a twinbill to UNC Pembroke, then fell, 10-3, in the nightcap Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. With the setbacks, Anderson dropped to 2-2 on the season, while UNC Pembroke moved to 3-1. The afternoon's opening game saw UNC Pembroke break a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Aaron Parnell led off the inning with a home run and added two more with one out. The Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Saxon ripped a double to left field and designated hitter followed with a blast over the fence for his first home run of the season. Each team added solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings before the Braves appeared to take control by plating four runs in the top of the seventh inning, taking an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning. But the Trojans refused to go away quietly, rallying for five runs in the eighth. Right fielder Ryan Kirkland began the comeback by leading off the frame with a single to right-center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Senior Trent Still went to first after being hit by a pitch and Anderson loaded the bases with no outs when Saxon reached on an error by UNCP's Tom Poricelli. Matt Hill drove in Kirkland with the first run on a high sacrifice fly to left and Still crossed the plate on another wild pitch. After Blake May singled through the left side, Chance Thomas drew a one-out walk to again load the bases. Shortstop Thomas Padro followed with his second hit of the game, driving in Saxon for the third score of the inning. Coach Joe Miller then called on freshman Tony Price to pinch hit, and the Columbia, S.C. native delivered with a single to drive in two runs and knot the score for the first time of the contest. The Anderson defense held UNC Pembroke scoreless in the ninth and the Trojans threatened with two outs when Saxon tripled, but Anderson was unable to capitalize sending the contest to extra innings. The Trojans matched UNC Pembroke's solo run in the 10th inning, but came up just short, as the Braves scored again in the 11th while AU had two runners reach base with two out but was unable to push across the equalizer. The second contest of the day saw UNC Pembroke again jump out in front by scoring four runs in the third inning and the Braves never trailed, as AU notched a run in the bottom of the third and equaled the Braves pair in the sixth, but were unable to get any closer as UNC Pembroke added four more in the seventh. Ryan Saxon collected four hits, including two doubles on the afternoon, while third baseman Blake May also notched four hits in the twinbill. Senior designated hitter Matt Hill recorded three RBI off a single and double en route to posting an .857 slugging percentage for the two outings.
