ANDERSON, S.C. -- In a marathon contest that lasted more than
four hours and saw a combined 34 hits, Anderson outlasted visiting
UNC Pembroke, 16-15, in college baseball action Saturday evening at
a cold and soggy Anderson Memorial Stadium. Sophomore Ryan Kirkland
notched the game-winning hit to score Thomas Padro from second with
two out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Anderson withstood a
late charge by the Braves. The right fielder's single came after
Padro was hit by a pitch with two out and moved into scoring
position on Derek Hipp's single to left. The Trojans held a 15-8
cushion heading into the ninth inning but UNC Pembroke recorded six
hits in the inning, including two for extra bases, and knotted the
score by plating seven runs. UNC Pembroke (1-1) jumped out in front
with a two-run second inning, but Anderson (2-0) answered with
seven runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, all with two
outs. The Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, as
center fielder Hipp drilled his first home run of the season, a
three-run shot that scored Jonathan Romano and Padro. The Trojans
then turned a walk, two consecutive singles and a two-RBI double by
designated hitter Matt Hill into the five-run advantage. The Braves
countered with four more runs in the top of the third inning to
close to within a single run, but AU responded with one in the
third and two more in the fourth to build a 10-6 lead. With one out
in the third, Padro reached on an error by Braves shortstop Aaron
Parnell and came around to score on Ryan Kirkland's single to left.
Junior Ryan Saxon led off the fourth with a single to left and Hill
followed by collecting AU's third walk of the night. Catcher Brett
Scarberry plated Saxon with a single to left and Hill crossed the
plate with Padro's two-out double. UNC Pembroke added solo runs in
the seventh and eighth frames, while Anderson answered with three
in the seventh and two in the bottom of the eighth to set the stage
for the ninth inning. Trent Still, Kirkland, Saxon and Blake May
all posted three hits, while Padro scored four runs and Hipp scored
three in the contest. May's three hits included a double and a
triple. Anderson and UNC Pembroke wrap up their weekend series with
a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
