ANDERSON, S.C. -- Less than 24 hours after sweeping Conference
Carolinas rival Erskine, the Anderson baseball team split a
doubleheader with North Greenville Tuesday night at Anderson
Memorial Stadium. North Greenville gained an early lead after two
innings in the open then held the potent Anderson offense at bay
over the final five innings to hold off the Trojans, 6-3. Anderson
bounced back in the nightcap for a 10-4 win and improved to 6-3 on
the season. After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders jumped
ahead early in game two with a solo run in the second, but Anderson
countered by sending 11 batters to the plate with five of the
Trojans scoring to give AU a lead it would not surrender. Second
baseman Ryan Saxon got the rally started with a leadoff single up
the middle and the Trojans showed their patience at the plate, as
Anderson hitters drew five walks and one was hit by a pitch to set
up the big offensive inning. Saxon moved to second on a wild pitch
and left fielder Matt Hill went to first on a walk. Sophomore Blake
May was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs. Shortstop
Thomas Padro hit a chopper to third and Saxon was forced out at the
plate, leaving the bases full with one out. AU designated hitter
Tony Price and catcher Luke Sawyer drew back-to-back walks to force
in the first Trojan runs, and leadoff hitter Derek Hipp filed out
to center, but Price crossed the plate with the fourth AU score.
Following two more walks, Anderson held a 5-1 cushion. North
Greenville added another run in the third inning, but Anderson
broke the game open with more runs in the bottom of the frame by
parlaying two singles an error and a pair of walks into three runs.
The Crusaders pulled within 8-4 with two runs in the fourth, but
Anderson answered with a pair in the fifth to set the final margin.
The first game of the afternoon saw Anderson take a 2-1 lead when
Hipp led off the game with a single to right-center and sophomore
Ryan Kirkland followed with his third triple of the young season to
plate Hipp. One out later, Saxon's fly to left drove Kirkland in
and AU held the 2-1 lead. But the advantage was short-lived, as NGU
posted four runs in the top of the second to collect all the runs
they needed, going on for the 6-3 victory. May was 5-for-6 on the
afternoon, while Saxon went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Hipp picked up
four hits in the twinbill. Senior Trent Still collected four walks
and Kirkland drove in four RBI on the day. Junior left-handed
hurler Ben Roberts took the loss in game one, with Erick Sanderson
improving to 2-0 on the season with the game-two win. Anderson gets
back on the diamond Wednesday afternoon against Peach Belt
Conference opponent USC Aiken, with first-pitch slated for 4 p.m.
