ANDERSON, S.C. - Four Trojans reached double figures as the
Anderson women's basketball team wrapped up its season-opening
three-game homestand by rallying from a six-point deficit inside
the final five minutes to down rival Erskine, 73-64, Thursday night
at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (1-2) collected its first win of the 2010-11 campaign,
while Erskine (0-3) is still looking for its first victory of the
season. The rivalry has been one-sided over the past several
seasons with the Trojans winning nine straight and 13 of the last
14 meetings with the Flying Fleet. Erskine last defeated AU in
February, 2006.
Erkine guard Christine Phan's 3-pointer with 5:49 left in the
game capped an 11-2 run by the visitors and gave the Flying Fleet
its largest lead of the night, 62-53, before the Trojans' Emily
Willoughby connected on her third trey of the night from deep in
the right corner, igniting AU's comeback.
Following an empty possession by each team, Willoughby came up
with a steal and got the ball to Alexa Neal for a layup to pull AU
within 62-58 at the 4:34 mark. After a basket by the Fleet's Neci
Allen gave EC a six-point edge, Anderson closed the game by scoring
15 unanswered points to claim the victory.
Forward Breonda Shannon knocked down 6-of-8 free throws inside the
final four minutes of action, hitting both ends of a one-an-one
with 2:11 left, tying the score for the final time of the night at
64 apiece.
Following the sophomore's second pair from the stripe that gave
AU its final lead, the Trojan bench called timeout and the move
paid immediate dividends, as the AU defense forced a turnover.
Sophomore forward Tilde Ahlin sandwiched a pair of layups around
two free throws from Ashley Abed, giving the Trojans a 72-64
advantage with 30 seconds remaining and Shannon set the final
margin with her seventh free throw of the contest.
In a game that quickly became a contest of offensive spurts,
Erskine snapped a 10-10 tie and edged out to a five-point lead
midway through the opening half, but AU responded with back-to-back
3-pointers, from Willoughby and Alissa Diaz, respectively, to
regain the advantage, at 18-17. The pair of treys began a 20-3
outburst that saw the Trojans build a 13-point lead, the largest by
either team, with four minutes left in the half.
The Flying Fleet refused to go away and trimmed the AU lead to
35-29 at the intermission, then opened the second frame with a 19-8
run that turned its deficit into a five-point lead with 13:01 left.
EC slowly edged out to their nine-point advantage before Anderson
began its rally.
Abed recorded a game-high 21 points, while Diaz netted 13.
Willoughby and Shannon each added 11 points, with Neal handing out
a game-high five assists and collecting six rebounds.
Junior guard Porsha Morgan led the Fleet with 17 points, while
Allen recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
Anderson has a 13-day layoff before getting back on the hardwood
on Dec. 2, when the Trojans visit Winston-Salem State looking to
avenge a loss from earlier this season. Tip-off versus the Lady
Rams is slated for 6 p.m.
