ANDERSON, S.C. -- In a battle of unbeatens on the young season,
two second-half goals lifted the Anderson mens soccer team past
18th- ranked Francis Marion, 2-0, Tuesday night at the AU Soccer
Field. The two teams played evenly early in the match, but Anderson
(3-0) broke through to get on the scoreboard with two goals in a
seven-minute span late in the second frame. Sophomore midfielder
Lasse Sohrweide blasted a shot past FMU keeper Clark Richeson at
the 74:51 mark of the contest, marking Sohrweide's first
game-winner of the season and the seventh of his career as a
Trojan. Earlier in the match, Richeson made diving stops to both
his left and right, recording four saves in the first half, but was
unable to keep AU off the scoreboard in the final 16 minutes of
action, as senior Paulo Passini's header off a free kick from Zach
Denson found the back of the net less than seven minutes after
Sohrweide's score. "We started slow tonight but picked it up," said
Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "We were really focused in the last
20 minutes. Last season we didn't finish matches like we should
have, but we finished well tonight." Anderson threatened early in
the match, as sophomore Mark Smith raced down the left side of the
pitch and lifted a cross into the box at the 5:25 mark, but AU was
unable to get off a shot. Sohrweide followed less than a minute
later with another feed from the same area but again the Trojans
were unable to capitalize. Moments later, Richeson knocked down
Passini's first attempt of the night, and the balled rolled loose
but no Trojan was close enough to take advantage. AU continued to
apply pressure and Sohrweide's close attempt in the 27th minute of
action narrowly missed, just grazing the crossbar and the teams
went to intermission with neither squad able to find the net. AU
recorded 11 corner kicks on the night, while the Patriots collected
two and the Trojans out-shot Francis Marion, 19-6, with Sohrweide
collecting eight of the attempts. Denson's assist was the second of
the season for the Lilburn, Ga. native. Junior Benjamin Pepion was
between the pipes for the Trojans, earning his third win of the
2009 campaign and his first shutout. "The home environment really
helped," said Miller, whose squad has not lost at home since Oct.
18, 2007 - a span of 11 contests including tonight's match. Next up
for the Trojans is a Friday night matchup versus Flagler College,
with kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m. at the AU Soccer field.
