Dhiren Rathod was a highly ranked junior player in India when he received a letter from Max Grubbs with an offer to play tennis at Anderson College. In two years at AC, Rathod played the No. 2 singles position and compiled a conference record of 21-2.

He was one of two players to survive the accident on May 12, 1977 that took the lives of Grubbs and four of his teammates. After leaving AC, he played the No. 1 position at UNC Charlotte for two seasons, then played professional tennis.
