Anderson Falls to Newberry in SAC Road Contest, 8–5

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Despite a persistent offensive effort and multi-hit games from Braeden Harrison, Dom Bello, and Gray Wells, Anderson University came up short in a tightly contested 8–5 loss to Newberry College on Friday evening at the Smith Road Complex.

The Trojans struck first, capitalizing on a lead-off walk and an RBI fielder's choice by Brooks Mauro to plate a run in the top of the first. Newberry answered immediately with a sacrifice fly by Kyle Faircloth to even the score. Anderson regained the lead in the second when Harrison drove in a run with a single to left.

However, Newberry mounted a three-run rally in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of back-to-back hit batters and aggressive base running. RBI ground outs by Luke White and Colby Mims, followed by a run-scoring single from Faircloth, pushed the Wolves ahead 4–2.

Anderson chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Bello singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Harrison. An error to begin the fifth allowed Zach Stover to reach, and Wells knocked him in with a single to tie the game at 4–4.

Newberry retook the lead in the sixth on Faircloth's second RBI of the night, then extended the advantage with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. A two-RBI ground out from Colby Gentry in the eighth proved to be the decisive blow.

In the ninth, the Trojans loaded the bases with one out. Wells grounded out to drive in Carson Molinaroli from third, trimming the deficit to 8–5. But reliever Will Carey induced a fly out to end the comeback bid.

Bello led the Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Harrison added two hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Wells finished with two hits and two RBIs as well.

With the loss, Anderson drops to 23–20 overall. The Trojans will return to action tomorrow at the Smith Road Complex as they wrap up their league series with Newberry with a doubleheader slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
