ANDERSON, S.C. -- Riding sophomore
Ava Skeffington's (Charlotte, N.C.) season-high six goals, good for her 100th career point, the Trojans downed No. 11 Flagler College 16-15 for the biggest win in program history. The Trojans move to 7-5 overall after breaking the Saints' five-game winning streak.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team," head coach
Nicole Voci said. "After a long stretch on the road, coming home and taking down the No. 11 team in the country is a testament to their grit, determination and trust in each other and the coaching staff. They earned this one. We'll enjoy this win tonight and get back to it tomorrow."
Skeffington finished the night with six points, for a career total of 104. She is seventh in the conference in goals with 29 so far this season, having played two or more fewer games than everyone else in the top 10. Skeffington opened the scoring for the Trojans, tying things up at one in what would be a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with the Saints up 5-4. She tacked on another in the first quarter while
Ellie Wilkins (Chuluota, Fla.) and
Ava Scattareggia (Watervliet, N.Y.) got their first of the night.
Wilkins tied her career-high with four while Scattareggia put away three goals and two assists for five points.
The Trojans ran away with things in the second quarter, winning it 6-1 riding three goals from Skeffington, one from Wilkins and one from
Megan Muir (Bedford, N.H.) who finished the night with two goals and two assists.
The Saints answered in coming out of the locker room and won the third quarter 6-2. They held Skeffington scoreless while Wilkins buried both for the Trojans.
The final 15 minutes was a fight with things all tied up at 12 to start it off. Wilkins pulled the Trojans level at 13 seven minutes in and Scattareggia followed her up for a 14-13 lead. Skeffington scored her first goal of the half when her team needed it most to tied things up at 15 with 1:54 to play, thanks to a big caused turnover by
Jackie Tiongco (Memphis, Tenn.) to give the Trojans possession. It was
Emma Toole (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) who buried the final goal of the day to secure the 16-15 win.
The Trojan defense stepped up big against a dominant Saints offense. Goalkeeper
Amelia King (Daluca, Ga.) came up with eight clutch saves for a .348 save percentage. Toole came up with five of the Trojans' 15 draw controls while
Edie Wilkins (Chuluota, Fla.) picked up four.
Anderson was 13-13 in clears and 5-6 from free position.
The Trojans are home again this weekend when they welcome South Atlantic Conference opponent Coker University on Saturday, March 29 at 4:00 p.m.
