WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The Trojans fell just short at Palm Beach Atlantic University on Tuesday afternoon 14-12 in an evenly matched contest that saw nine tied scores and four lead changes. Anderson moves to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
The Trojans struggled at the draw, winning 11 while the Sailfish picked up 18. They went 21-22 on clears and kept pace with the Palm Beach offense, recording 29 shots to their 30.
Goalkeeper Amelia King (Dacula, Ga.) tallied nine saves on a .391 save percentage and picked up four ground balls.
The Sailfish took an early 2-0 lead before Ellie Wilkins (Chuluota, Fla.) opened the scoring for the Trojans. Wilkins had a hat trick to tie her career-high on nine shots and seven on goal. Ava Skeffington (Charlotte, N.C.) followed her to tie things up at two with her first of three goals on three shots.
It was back-and-forth for the rest of the first quarter with both teams putting up five goals. Wilkins added her second of the day while Emma Toole (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) buried her first of two. Skeffington rounded out the first quarter scoring for the Trojans.
The second period started much more defensively for both sides, as neither team found the back of the net for the first six minutes. Makayla Ott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) buried her second goal of the season, assisted by Megan Muir (Bedford, N.H.) to give the Trojans a 6-5 edge.
Jordan Mills (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored her first career goal with two minutes to play in the first half. The Sailfish answered with two straight to get an 8-7 lead going into the locker room.
The Trojans scored three in the third period from the sticks of Wilkins, Toole and Ava Scattareggia (Watervliet, N.Y.) with her lone goal of the game.
Muir came up with her one goal of the day assisted by Blaine Randolph (Charlotte, N.C.) to give the Trojans an 11-10 lead. Muir added four ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover on the day.
Skeffington completed her hat trick to give Anderson another lead 12-11 with ten minutes to play. From there the Sailfish scored three unanswered to secure the win.
The Trojans get back to conference play next week when they head to Lincoln Memorial University on Wednesday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
