ANDERSON, S.C. — The Anderson University (3-1) baseball team overcame Southern Wesleyan University (1-4) with a 7-5 victory in a non-conference baseball matchup on Tuesday at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Freshman Kaleb Owens (Easley, S.C.) earned the win after delivering three solid innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits. He struck out four batters along the way. Sophomore Corben Childers (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings and holding the Warriors scoreless while recording two strikeouts.
Junior Braeden Harrison (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued his great season, going three-for-four from the dish with a pair of RBIs in the contest. Junioe Gray Wells (Chapin, S.C.) pitched in a pair of RBIs as well with sophomore Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.) and sophomore Dom Bello (Orlando, Fla.) each tabbed one as well.
The Trojans wasted no time on offense, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Stover kicked off the scoring with a triple to right center, bringing around Ketchin while Wells added a sacrifice fly to bring in Stover from third on the next at-bat.
Southern Wesleyan responded in the top of the third, cutting Anderson's lead to 2-1 on an RBI groundout. However, Anderson immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning, with Wells driving in Molinaroli on a groundout and Harrison's double bringing in Ketchin to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Warriors rallied in the top of the fifth, plating four runs on four hits. The offensive outburst included an RBI double and a two-run single, but it would be their last offensive push of the day. After tying the contest up in bottom of the fifth with an RBI-single from Harrison, the Trojans would take the lead on an inside the park homerun from Bello that gave the Trojans the slight 6-5 lead. Anders held on the rest of the way, adding an insurance run seventh inning to secure the 7-5 win.
The Black and Gold return to Anderson Memorial tomorrow, Friday February 7, as they welcome in Limestone for a non-conference matchup with first-pitch slated for 4:00 p.m.
