Trojans Suffer Five Set Heartbreaker In SAC Semifinals

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Trojans' South Atlantic Conference Championship run came to an end on Friday night as No. 2 Anderson fell to No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne in the semifinals 3-2 by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 21-25, 23-25 and 10-15.

"Proud of our effort," head coach Todd Hay said. "The team showed a lot of stamina and played hard all night. We will learn from this and get ready for the regional coming up after Thanksgiving. It's never fun to lose but the experience gained from a match like this is very valuable."

The Trojans won multiple statistical categories, with 76 kills to the Bears' 62, 72 assists to their 61 and 89 digs to their 77.

Several Trojans had outstanding performances, led by junior Ava Reeves (Lexington, S.C.) with a career-high 20 kills.

Junior Emily Campbell (Statesville, N.C.) had a big-time career-high of 18 kills on a .469 clip. She added three blocks.

Sophomore Mia Elder (Leland, N.C.) was just two shy of her career-high with 18 kills and seven digs.

Freshman Mikaylah Hedlund (Fountain Inn, S.C.) came up with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs along with a team-high four blocks.

Junior Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a big season-high 59 assists with a career-high 19 digs for a double-double.

Junior Sophie Deese (Hickory, N.C.) came up with 16 digs while senior Katy Smith (Fleming Island, Fla.) had 14 digs.

The Trojans came out in dominant fashion, taking two easy wins and swinging .346 through the first three sets.

The third set was the biggest battle of the night, with both teams hitting their best of the night. The Bears hit at a .545 clip in the third set with 19 kills while the Trojans came up with 20 kills on a .375 hitting percentage.

The momentum shifted for the Trojans in the third set when freshman libero Jamie Juhnevicz (Taylors, S.C.) came off with an apparent injury leaving quick adjustments to be made for the Trojan defense. The freshman had nine digs through the first three sets.

The Trojans struggled to gain momentum back in the last two sets, hitting a .180 and .050.

Anderson will get their seeding for the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament on Monday, Nov. 23rd when the Selection Show airs at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans were ranked No. 2 in the most recent polls.
