Trojans Secure Semifinal Spot With 3-1 Win Over Mars Hill

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Trojans are moving on to the South Atlantic Conference Semifinals after a 3-1 (16-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-19) win over No. 7 Mars Hill (11-14, 7-11 SAC) in the Quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Anderson will take on No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C. for a chance to head to the Championship.

"I was pleased with how well our serve receive passing bounced back after a few rough outings," head coach Todd Hay said. "Mars Hill played a really good defense against us early on and it took us a while to get going. Fortunately, we had some good defense of our own to keep us in the sets."

Sophomore Mia Elder (Leland, N.C.) dropped a career-high 20 kills on a .341 clip to lead the Trojan offense. She added four blocks and three digs.

Junior Ava Reeves (Lexington, S.C.) was the only other Trojan in double digits on offense with 13 kills.

Junior Emily Campbell (Statesville, N.C.) came up big at the net with seven blocks, six kills and five digs.

The defense was well-rounded, led by senior Katy Smith (Fleming Island, Fla.) with a season-high 23 digs.

Freshman Jamie Juhnevicz (Taylors, S.C.) picked up 21 digs while junior Sophie Deese (Hickory, N.C.) had 11 and freshman Kaleigh Garren (Anderson, S.C.) had 10.

Junior Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) dished out 41 assists with nine digs.

The win didn't come easy for the Trojans as the Lions came out hot and cruised to a 25-16 win. Anderson hit .000 in the first set with nine kills and nine errors, while the Lions had their best clip of the game at .214 with 14 kills.

The second set was tight to start before the Trojans went on a 10-0 run to go up 21-10 and cruise to a 25-12 win.

The Trojans had to fight through the third set and never got comfortable. They tied things up at 13 and maintained a lead for the rest of the set, but the Lions stayed within two.

Anderson held a lead for the entire fourth set, cruising to the 25-19 win on a game-high .255 clip.

"Glad we are able to move on and play Friday," Hay said. "Thanks to all of the Trojan Army who came out. It was a great crowd."

The Trojans turn their attention to Friday's semifinal matchup in Rock Hill, S.C. against the No. 3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne. The Trojans went 1-1 with the Bears this season, taking a 3-0 win in their most recent matchup.
