WINGATE, N.C. – Dropping their first back-to-back contests since mid-way through the 2022 season, the Anderson University (5-7, 2-3 SAC) volleyball team found themselves on the unfavorable side of a 3-0 decision to the Bulldogs of Wingate (10-2, 3-1 SAC) in the unfriendly Cuddy Arena on Saturday, September 28.
Sophomore Emily Cambell (Statesville, N.C.) led the way for the Black and Gold on the day with seven kills on 21 swings, posting an attack percentage of .238. Freshman Mia Elder (Leland, N.C.) and junior Kaitlyn Barrett (Inman, S.C.) each added five kills to the tally for the Trojans while sophomore Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) chipped in 23 assists while junior Katy Smith (Fleming Island, Fla.) posted a team-high 10 digs.
The Bulldogs opened quickly in the first set taking the first three points of the set, but the Trojans were able to keep it interesting early on as they were able to tie up the contest at nine. But a pair of five-point streaks by Wingate in the late goings of the set gave them the 25-17 win in the opener.
Wingate posted an earlier streak in the second set to stretch their lead out to 7-2. That early streak proved to be pivotal in the set as neither team truly got on a run throughout the remainder, but the early lead was enough for the Bulldogs to upend the Trojans in the second set by a 25-16 margin.
The third set was all Wingate until the 21-6 mark of the set when the Trojans were able to flip the switch on the Bulldogs and go on a seven-point run to close the gap to 21-13. However, that was all the Trojans were able to muster in the contest and they were slightly outscored by a 4-3 margin to close out the game as Wingate took the third, 25-16.
The Trojans will look to cut off their losing skid on Friday, October 4 as they welcome in the Pioneers of Tusculum University to the Abney Athletic Center for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
