EMORY, Va. -- Anderson's men's soccer team scored their first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Emory & Henry on Sunday evening. The Trojans move to 1-1-1 on the season.
"Happy to get the first win of the 2024 season tonight!" said Men's Soccer Head Coach Michael Zion. "It was great to see so many guys get involved in the goals."
The AU offense tallied six goals from five different Trojans, outshooting the Wasps 21-3. Marc Vila (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) opened the scoring 25 minutes into the match, finding a pass from Eloy Allimadi (Heidelberg, Germany) for a left-footed shot across the frame to the bottom right of the net. Anderson entered halftime holding a 1-0 advantage over Emory & Henry.
Following the intermission, the Wasps leveled the score (56') before the Trojans notched five unanswered goals in the last half-hour of play. Allimadi recorded his second assist on the night with a cross that connected with the head of Diego Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) to put Anderson up 2-1. Seven minutes later, Jaramillo added another goal to his resume, burying a penalty to the back of the net following a Wasp handball in the box.
Ahead by two, the Black and Gold continued the pressure as Emmanuel Arkoh (Barcelona, Spain) capitalized on a flustered Wasp backline, sending one over the E&H keeper for his first goal wearing an AU jersey. Less than two minutes later, the Trojans drew a foul just outside the goal box, and Luiz Lezema (Liberty, S.C.) sent an untouched direct kick 20 yards to the back post, boosting the AU lead to four. Finally, a one-touch dagger off the foot of Steven Udy (Clover, S.C.) found the back of the net off a pass from Jaramillo, and the Trojans secured a 6-1 victory.
"Hopefully we can build some momentum and keep it going!" added Zion.
The Trojans enter a two-home-match week, welcoming Montevallo on Wednesday (Sept. 18) and Mars Hill on Saturday (Sept. 21)
