SAN ANTONIO, TX - Though they came away 1-1, the Trojan volleyball team came to play in day one of the Rattler Invitational in San Antonio, TX. Anderson is now 3-3 on the season.
Taking on two high caliber Division II teams - including the No. 1 team in the country - the Trojans took a 3-1 win over East Central (4-1) by set scores of 17-25, 30-28, 25-23 and 25-17 and battled against No. 1 Tampa (4-0), falling 1-3 with scores of 20-25, 24-26, 25-28 and 14-25.
"The team fought hard all day and I was proud of the overall effort. We definitely saw some areas of strength on which we hope to build," head coach
Todd Hay said. "Playing tough teams exposes so much about our team that we might not otherwise learn playing lesser competition. We look forward to two more tough matches tomorrow and continuing to build towards the heart of the conference schedule."
Ava Reeves has opened her sophomore campaign with 10 or more kills in all six games so far and three straight double-doubles. Today was no different as Reeves came up with a career-high 17 kills in game one along with six aces and 12 digs. In game two, Reeves came up with 10 kills, 13 digs and one ace.
Sophomore
Emily Campbell came up big in game one as well, with a career-high 17 kills on a .538 hitting percentage. Eight of those kills came in the fourth set. She tacked on six more kills in game two with another impressive hitting percentage of .429.
Junior
Kaitlyn Barrett also had a career-high with 12 kills in game one and followed it up with nine kills in game two.
Sophomore setter
Ellie Nieporte was leading her offense well, with a career-high 48 assists and 10 digs in game one and 40 assists and 12 digs in game two.
The Trojans are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 14th at 1:30 p.m. when they take on Texas A&M International and 6:30 p.m. to take on the hosts, St. Mary's.
