NEWBERRY, SC -- The volleyball team (2-2, 1-0 SAC) came up with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-9, 25-14) win over Newberry College (2-2, 0-1 SAC) in their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season with sophomores
Ava Reeves and
Karley Black stepping up big on offense. Despite a back-and-forth first set, the Trojans came back in a big way to take the game in four sets and hold the Wolves to just nine points in the third set.
"It's always tough to win on the road and it's good to get off on the right foot in conference play," said head coach
Todd Hay. "Once we settled in after an up and down first set, our errors went down and our energy went up. We are now looking forward to our Texas trip and some really tough competition."
As a team, the Trojans had a .213 hitting percentage with 54 kills to Newberry's 28.
Reeves had a career day with a double-double of 14 kills (career-high) and 11 digs. She tacked on one ace and one block.
Black also had a career high of 13 kills and added a block of her own.
Fellow sophomore
Emily Campbell was the third Trojan in double digits, tying her career-high of 11 kills with a .364 hitting percentage. She added two blocks.
Kaitlyn Barrett and
Brantley Chipley added seven kills each.
Sophomore setter
Ellie Nieporte was key to so many Trojans hitting high numbers. Nieporte came up with a double-double of 33 assists and 13 digs.
The Trojans head to San Antonio, TX this weekend for a four-game tournament against multiple first-time opponents before returning to conference play in their home opener next Tuesday, September 17th at 7 p.m.
