ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson men's basketball delivered in front of home fans on Thursday night with a big 92-77 win over nonconference opponent Lees-McRae College to remain undefeated three games into the season.
"Abney was absolutely rocking tonight! What a blessing it is to play at a place this passionate about their team," head coach
Jimmie Williams said. "Our student section had a major impact on the game, and our community comes out and supports us so well. Lees McRae is a really talented team that presses and traps all game, and does a great job of taking teams out of what they want to do. it bothered us in the first half. We settled in much better against their pressure and played together.
Austin Webb and AJ Wright were phenomenal for us in the 2nd half. They fed off each other and really got us going offensively. We made a few adjustments that really helped get them going and loosened up the pressure."
The first half saw seven lead changes and the Bobcats went into the locker room up 40-37, but the Trojans turned things around in the second half, winning it 55-37.
All five starters were in double-digits for the Trojans again, led by
Austin Webb (South Point, Ohio) who dropped a career-high 28 points in the contest on 12-18 shooting from the field and 4-9 shooting from deep. He was the Trojans' only scorer from behind the arc. He added one rebound, one assist and one steal.
Cole Middleton (Atlanta, Ga.) came up with 17 points shooting 8-13, five rebounds and one steal.
Sam Perez (Apex, N.C.) had a team-high eight rebounds, six assists and 15 points. He was 9-9 at the line.
AJ Wright Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) had a season-high 14 points and flirted with a double-double with nine assists. He added five rebounds and four steals.
Dallas Jones (Gainesville, Fla.) rounded out the scoring for the starters with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
As a team, the Trojans shot 57.6 percent from the field. Their shooting percentage has improved in each game this season.
Williams said, "AJ was everywhere tonight. He has really become a complete guard that can play fast in transition, and can get us organized and in our stuff.
Sam Perez,
Cole Middleton, and
Dallas Jones were huge for us tonight too. A really good bright spot tonight was our two freshmen
Caleb McAbee and
Sentinel Moore. Both played pivotal roles in us being able to get it done tonight. Really proud of the growth we've shown this week, and that our guys continue to play together. Lee's McRae is going to win a lot of games this year. Thankful we stayed the course and stayed together. I love this team."
The Trojans are back home for their conference opener next Wednesday, Nov. 20th when they host Catawba College at 7:30 p.m.
