ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University (3-3-1, 2-2-0 SAC) men's soccer team's contest against the Catawba Indians (2-3-4, 1-2-2 SAC) was deadlocked through 77 minutes of action, before a foul inside the Catawba box gave them a penalty kick opportunity that they took advantage of as the Trojans dropped the 1-0 decision at home on Saturday, October 5.
The Trojans led the contest in shots with 11 compared to Catawba's nine, with three of those coming off the foot of freshman Juan Pablo Lepervanche (Caracas, Venezuela). Junior Franco Antoniolli Funes (Cordoba, Argentina) was able to corral three saves on the day, matching the effort from the Catawba Indians keeper.
It was a tale of two halves for the offenses as all three of Funes' saves came in the first half while the Catawba keeper was called upon three times in the closing 45 minutes of action. Anderson was able to fire off seven shots in the second half after only recording four in the opening stanza. Of those seven, a late attempt by Lepervanche off a free kick had the whole crowd fooled as it tucked just to the outside of the post and ended in the side netting outside the goal.
Just a few minutes later Catawba was able to push deep into their attacking third a draw a foul in the box that set them up with a penalty kick. The attempt and the keeper went in opposite directions, giving Catawba the lead and the eventual win.
The Trojans return to action on Wednesday, October 9 as they play host to the Nighthawks of North Georgia in a non-conference matchup set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
