WINGATE, N.C. -- Anderson's men's soccer team earned three points on the road Saturday evening, upsetting nationally-ranked Wingate 2-1 in comeback fashion.
"Big team effort tonight to pick up a huge three points," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Michael Zion. "It was a big win for us against a really good team."
The No. 17 Bulldogs opened the scoring, slotting one into the back of the net in the 18th minute of play. The advantage was short-lived, though, as the Trojans leveled the score at 1 in the 27th minute, when a service from junior Tiago Perez (Zaragoza, Spain) connected with the head of sophomore Ivan Cardona (Cali, Colombia) who forced the ball past the Wingate keeper.
The second half opened with Wingate outshooting Anderson 5-4 before Marc Vila (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) seeded it through traffic into the net for the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute. A free-kick from Juan Pablo Lepervanche (Caracas, Venezuela) found the foot of Trojan captain Perez, wo recorded his second assist of the night with a tap to Vila.
The Trojans were able to hold off the Bulldogs for the remaining 15 minutes of action to secure a South Atlantic Conference victory on the road.
On deck for Anderson are back-to-back home games, with the Trojans hosting No. 5 Limestone on Wednesday (Oct. 16) and No. 8 Coker on Saturday (Oct. 19).
