Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team picked up a point on the road Wednesday evening (Oct. 11) against the Mars Hill University Lions in a 0-0 draw.
Anderson entered the match with a 3-4-2 record, coming off a close 1-0 loss on the road over the weekend at Coker. Meanwhile, Mars Hill entered at 2-5-5, also losing 1-0 in their most recent match at home versus Wingate on homecoming weekend.
It was a competitive first 45 minutes of action as both sides were able to establish possession and create opportunities in the attacking third. Each squad had two shots on goal, with goalkeepers Franco Antoniolli Funes and James Price both picking up a pair of saves. The score remained deadlocked at 0-0 going into the second half.
Intensity picked up in the second half as both teams needed a win and three points in the standings with postseason play less than a month away. The score was tied late in the 88th minute when Peter Plougmand escaped the Trojan back line, but his shot was just wide and went out of bounds for a goal kick. With 20 seconds remaining in the match, the Lions were awarded a penalty kick and a chance to win. Jorge Perez Prada took the opportunity for Mars Hill, however his shot was saved by Franco Antoniolli Funes to preserve the draw as time expired.
"We showed a lot of character tonight and battled until the end," said coach Michael Zion. "Big save from Franco in the last seconds to help us earn a point. Mars Hill is a tough place to play as they have a great team. Now we must keep working and fighting for points in each game the rest of the way."
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 14) as they play host to local non-conference foe Erskine. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., with video and live stats available at autrojans.com as Anderson is set to honor their seniors before the game.
