Box Score ANDERSON, S.C.- The Anderson University men's soccer team earned its second home win with a 3-1 victory over nonconference opponent Francis Marion on Wednesday at Spero Financial Field.
"Having been on the road for the last few games, it was great to be back at home tonight," said head coach Michael Zion. "I thought the team performed very well against a very good team. We will have a quick turnaround and will have to get ourselves ready for another tough match on Saturday but I know these guys will be ready."
Anderson's Santiago Alvarez gathered the ball at the top of the box and whipped around kicking it past the keeper to give the Trojans an early, 1-0, lead (17:05). However, the Patriots were able to score the equalizer in the 31st minute of action on an indirect kick just outside the penalty box.
The match remained tied until senior Harry Ward broke loose and was eventually tackled by the goalie to prevent an easy score. Teammate Agustin Ortiz kicked the penalty kick past the keeper to put the Black and Gold up, 2-1 (61:10).
The Trojans were able to score an insurance goal after a fantastic pass from Alexandre Cox-Ashwood to Ward. Ward received the pass just inside the goal box and punched it past the keeper.
Anderson narrowly outshot Francis Marion, 15-13, with the Patriots winning the corner kick advantage, 3-2.
Senior keeper Gal Elyashiv was credited with four saves on the evening.
Anderson returns to action on Saturday when it host South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 pm.
