ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team ended Saturday's (Oct. 23) match against Mars Hill in a 1-1 draw at Spero Financial Field.

Anderson entered the match with a 10-2-1 record, riding a seven-game winning streak which earned the Trojans a national ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll at No. 20. On Wednesday (Oct. 20), Anderson came from behind against North Georgia with two late goals in the second half to win 3-2 in thrilling fashion.

Before the match, the Trojans honored nine seniors: Andres Osorio, Yani Diagne, Trevor Byrne, Caleb Compton, Bar Galanti, Neko Crist, Miguel Gallegos, Harry Ward, and Bryce Goodwyn.

It was a very competitive match as both teams had plent of scoring opportunities. Mars Hill outshot Anderson 18 to 16 for the day, with the Trojans having a five to four advantage in shots on goal. About midway through the first half, the Trojans were awarded a penalty kick courtesy of a handball in the box. Martin Carpena took the PK for the Trojans, placing the ball in the back of the net to give Anderson a 1-0 lead.

The Anderson defense held strong for most of the second half, as goalkeeper Gal Elyashiv finished the match with three saves. In the 87th minute, the Lions took a shot that was deflected in the box, with Peter Plougmand being at the right place at the right time to score for the Lions to force overtime. After a scoreless 20 minutes of overtime, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

"We were fortunate to walk away with a draw tonight," said coach Michael Zion. "We battled and the boys worked hard but the overall performance was not up to our standards. We will have to regroup, move on, and set our sights on the next game as we try to stay undefeated in October."

The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 30) as they will travel to face Lincoln Memorial. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
