AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Anderson volleyball team closed out its
longest road swing of the season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20),
setback to GRU Augusta in nonconference action, Tuesday night at
Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Anderson (2-2) suffered its second consecutive setback, while
GRU Augusta (5-0) remained undefeated with its fourth win over a
South Atlantic Conference team already this season.
Redshirt junior Tinsley Hallman led the Trojans with nine kills
on the night, while adding seven digs. Sophomore Marissa Mitter
tallied seven kills and four digs, while freshman Emily Conard
paced Anderson with 16 digs. Newcomer Megan Embry also collected
seven digs, with redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry recording 21
assists.
The Trojans fell behind early in the first set and were unable
to recover, as GRU Augusta used a 9-3 surge to turn a narrow 5-4
edge into a seven-point advantage. Anderson capitalized on three
straight errors by the Lady Jaguars as part of a 7-2 outburst by
the Trojans, as they trimmed the deficit to just 16-15. Embry
posted a pair of service aces during the rally, but GRU Augusta
countered with three consecutive points of its own and captured the
set with another 9-3 run.
The Lady Jaguars opened the second frame with a 6-1 run, and
while AU battled back within three, GRUA responded by scoring five
of the next six points to push out to a 13-6 lead. The Trojans
climbed within 15-10 on another GRU Augusta miscue, but could not
get any closer, as the Lady Jags opened up a late double-digit lead
en route to the set victory.
The third set featured seven ties and four lead changes, with
Mitter notching four of her seven kills in the final frame. GRU
Augusta snapped an 8-8 deadlock with five unanswered points to take
the largest lead of either team in the set, with AU chipping away
and taking its second lead of the set, at 17-16, as the Lady Jags
committed four consecutive attack errors. With the Trojans holding
a two-point lead, GRU Augusta called for a timeout and following
the pause, the Lady Jaguars posted five unanswered points to regain
the advantage and closed the set by scoring four of the final six
points.
Anderson will get back on the court Friday, when the Trojans
open South Atlantic Conference action by playing host to Queens.
First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Abney Athletic
Center.
