ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Using a balanced offensive attack, the
Anderson University volleyball team opened the season by sweeping
Dominican (N.Y.), 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-15), Friday afternoon at
the Flagler Invitational, hosted by the Saints at Flagler
Gymnasium.
"It was a great, enthusiastic team effort on our first venture
this season," said Anderson head coach Gene Krieger, who claimed
his first win at the helm of the program. "Tinsley [Hallman] and
Marissa [Mitter] both hitting over .400 was commendable."
Anderson (1-0) earned the win in the first-ever meeting between
the two schools, with Dominican falling to 0-2 after dropping a
decision to Florida Tech earlier in the afternoon.
Redshirt junior Tinsley Hallman led the Trojans with nine kills
on the afternoon and garnered seven digs, while junior Jessica
Harris and sophomore Marissa Mitter added seven kills apiece.
Redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry handed out a match-high 22
assists, while freshman Emily Conard led the AU defensive effort
with 16 digs.
Led by Mitter's four kills in the opening set, the Trojans
posted a blistering .379 hitting percentage in the first frame
while rallying from an early two-point deficit. With the Chargers
holding a 5-3 edge, AU posted a 17-3 run with freshman Megan Embry
and Hallman serving to take command of the set and took its largest
lead of the frame with the final 14-point margin.
The Trojans again rallied from an early two-point deficit in the
second frame - this time with a 13-2 outburst that turned a 4-2
Chargers' lead into a 15-6 Trojan advantage. Mitter and Hallman
combined for five kills during the surge, as AU held Dominican to
.050 hitting and took the two-set lead.
Anderson snapped a 5-5 deadlock in the third and final set with
five unanswered points, with Harris igniting the offense with one
of her three kills in the frame. The Chargers climbed within four
points on three occasions, but AU turned them away by closing the
set with an 8-2 run.
Anderson will get back in action on Saturday morning, when the
Trojans square off against Converse at 10 a.m., then wrap up their
visit to the Sunshine State with a contest versus Florida Tech at 2
p.m.
