BREVARD, N.C. - Despite a 58th minute goal from freshman Grayson
Frye, Anderson University men's soccer allowed two unanswered goals
in the final half and dropped a South Atlantic Conference contest
to Brevard, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field.
With the setback, the Trojans move to 2-3-1 overall and 1-2 in
conference play, while the Tornados claim their second straight
victory and improve to 2-5 on the season with a 2-1 mark in the
SAC.
AU managed seven shots for the match, as senior Hodaka Yonezawa
and newcomer Erik Dahlbeck led the way with two shots apiece. Frye,
who scored his first collegiate goal, made the most of his only
shot of the contest, while Brad Du Plooy and Lars Kaula each
tallied a shot.
After the teams played to a 0-0 halftime score, Frye broke the
scoreless stretch in the 58th minute when he headed in a corner
kick from Nicholas Bang. For Bang, the assist was his second of the
season, giving him the team lead in the category. With the goal,
Frye becomes the eighth different goal scorer for the Black and
Gold this season.
A minute later, Brevard answered when Gabriel Garcia converted a
penalty kick following a Trojan handball inside the 18-yard box.
The goal was Garcia's third of the season, which leads the
Tornados.
In the 74th minute, BC put the match out of reach when Ryan
McPhillips grabbed a pass from Chris Efenecy and slotted in a shot
past Anderson goalkeeper Devon Ashy for the eventual game-winning
goal. For McPhillips, the goal was his first of the season.
Anderson failed to record another shot for the remainder of the
contest, as the Tornado backline held the visitors to just one shot
on goal for the afternoon. Ashy suffered the setback, making three
saves for the match, while Brevard goalkeeper, Heath Turner, did
not record a save.
The Trojans look to get back on the winning track on Saturday
when they travel to Tusculum. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
