WINGATE, N.C. - Despite holding a one-goal advantage at the
halftime break, No. 19 Wingate used two second-half goals to hand
Anderson University men's soccer its first South Atlantic
Conference setback, falling 2-1 Saturday evening at the WU Soccer
Complex.
The Trojans drop to 2-2-1 overall and to an even 1-1 mark in the
conference, while the Bulldogs remain unbeaten on the season,
improving to 4-0-2 on the year and 2-0 for league play. In addition
to the victory, WU earns its first regular-season win over the
Black and Gold since 2010.
The home side out-shot the Trojans, 16-9, for the match,
including a 12-shot mark in the final 45 minutes. Anderson's trio
of Lars Kaula, Austin Billiot and Erik Dahlbeck led the team with
two shots apiece, while Dahlbeck earned his first collegiate goal
to open the match's scoring.
Dahlbeck's goal came in the 36th minute of action when AU earned
a corner kick. Freshman Johnny Landis sent the corner into the
Wingate box and found Trojan defender Josh Calabria, who flicked a
pass to Andre Carle. With the ball, Carle quickly flicked a pass to
an open Dahlbeck, who fired on an empty net to earn his first goal
in a Black and Gold uniform. In addition to the goal, Carle and
Calabria were credited with an assist.
Anderson went into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage, but
could hang on to its lead, as Wingate was awarded a penalty kick in
the 53rd minute. Bulldog Callum Ross sent a shot past AU goalkeeper
Devon Ashy for his fourth goal of the season and second from the
penalty spot this year.
As the match looked to be destined for extra time, Wingate
recorded its game-winning goal in the 86th minute when Jon Ander
grabbed a cross from Shaun Gadsby and chipped in a shot to seal the
home victory. Ander's second-half goal was his second of the
season.
Anderson was unable to fire another shot for the remainder of
the match, as the Trojans continue to search for their first true
road victory this year.
Ashy closed the evening with five saves, while his counterpart,
Pablo Jara, tallied four saves in the winning effort.
AU returns to the pitch on Wednesday when it heads to Brevard
for a SAC matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
