GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Behind its second-highest hitting
percentage of the season, the Anderson University volleyball posted
its fourth sweep of the season by blanking Tusculum, 3-0 (25-21,
25-22, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena.
In a battle between two evenly-matched teams, Anderson (5-4, 3-1
SAC) hit .312 on the afternoon, which was second only to its .326
attack accuracy in a sweep of Catawba a week ago. The Trojans also
equaled their season low by committing just eight attack errors in
coming away with their first road victory of the season and
snapping a brief two-game skid.
Tusculum slipped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the league, while
seeing its win streak halted at two.
Redshirt junior Tinsley Hallman led the Trojan attack by posting
her fifth straight double-double, knocking down 12 kills and
recording 15 digs, while chipping in five service aces. Redshirt
junior Priscilla Irizarry already had her fourth double-double of
the season midway through the second set, as the native of Lares,
Puerto Rico, dished out a match-high 38 assists and came up with 13
digs. Junior Jessica Harris added nine kills and three blocks,
while sophomore Marissa Mitter notched nine kills, as well, to go
along with eight digs. Junior Allison Gaminde and sophomore Serena
Jackson each tallied eight kills on the afternoon. Freshman Emily
Conard posted 15 digs, with fellow newcomer Megan Embry tallying
eight digs in two sets.
A late surge and a .333 hitting percentage propelled the Trojans
to a first-set victory. The Pioneers scored the first point of the
opening set, but it proved to be their only lead of the frame, as
Anderson responded by reeling off five unanswered points as part of
a 10-2 match-opening outburst. Hallman notched a pair of aces and a
kill, with Harris knocking down two kills during the decisive early
run. After the Trojans opened the early eight-point advantage on a
kill from Mitter, Tusculum refused to surrender and hung around,
trimming AU's lead to five on five occasions before knotting the
score at 17 apiece. Despite the Pioneer rally, the Trojans did not
relinquish the lead and went on to open a late five-point advantage
before settling for the four-point win.
The second set featured eight ties, but just two lead changes
with neither team able to build more than a four-point lead. But
another late run lifted the Trojans to the lead, as AU again hit
.333 and built a late four-point lead, while holding off the
Pioneers down the stretch.
Tusculum snapped a 9-9 deadlock with three straight points to
take its first lead since the opening point of the match and held
the advantage until the Trojans overcame a 17-16 deficit with four
consecutive points and would lead the rest of the way. Hallman
fueled the late offense by notching three kills, with freshman
Jayln Knight sealing the win with an ace.
After falling behind early, a pair of scoring runs by the
Trojans proved to be the difference in the third frame. Tusculum
jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, but Hallman posted three aces and
the Trojans rattled off eight unanswered points to take a lead they
would not relinquish.
The Pioneers cut the AU lead to just two, at 11-9, but the
Trojans turned them away with a 5-1 surge, which was fueled by
kills from four different Trojans and strong serving by Mitter.
Anderson went on to build a late seven-point lead - their largest
of the set.
Anderson wraps up its three-game conference road swing with a
visit to Newberry on Tuesday. First-serve versus the Wolves is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
