ANDERSON, S.C. - Sophomore Serena Jackson posted a match-high 14
kills to help lead the Anderson University volleyball team to a 3-0
(25-23, 25-11, 25-18) sweep of South Atlantic Conference-foe Coker,
Friday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (8-8, 6-4 SAC) snapped a four-match skid, while
notching its 11th straight win over Coker. The Cobras slipped to
4-11 overall and 1-9 in league action with their second loss in
three outings.
Jackson added four digs and three total blocks to her night,
with teammate Marissa Mitter chipping in eight kills and six digs.
Redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry nearly came up with her seventh
double-double of the season by handing out 33 assists and recording
nine digs for the third straight outing. Defensively, freshman
Emily Conard notched a match-best 17 digs, with fellow freshman
Jayln Knight coming off the bench to add five kills and commit just
one attack error in nine attempts for a .444 hitting percentage.
Junior middle hitter Jessica Harris tallied five blocks on the
evening.
The Trojans overcame a late four-point deficit and Coker's early
.545 hitting percentage to claim the narrow first-set win. After
Anderson posted the first point of the set on an Irizarry kill, the
Cobras answered with four consecutive points as part of a 10-3
outburst to take a six-point advantage - their largest of the
night. After the visitors opened a 12-7 cushion, the Trojans
countered with five unanswered points to knot the score for just
the second time, at 12 apiece. Freshman Katie Lloyd fueled the
comeback with two of her four service aces on the night.
A kill by Jackson broke the deadlock and gave AU its first lead
since the opening point, but the advantage was short-lived, as
Coker responded with an 8-3 surge to claim a 20-16 lead. But
another kill from Jackson sparked a 5-0 run, with the Cobras
staking a late one-point lead twice and led 23-22 before AU posted
the final three points to take the win. Junior Tinsley Hallman
ignited the comeback with a kill, then Mitter and Harris teamed up
for a block and Harris capped the set with her first
kill.
The Trojans snapped a 7-7 deadlock in the second frame with
another 5-0 surge, with Harris and Allison Gaminde's block giving
Anderson a lead it would not relinquish. The five unanswered points
were the start of a larger 13-3 run that saw the Trojans grab a
double-digit, 20-10, lead en route to the 14-point victory.
Coker jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage in the third set,
before the Trojans turned a 7-3 deficit into a 9-8 edge with Embry
posting a pair of aces during the rally. The score was knotted six
times before Gaminde sparked a 5-0 run that gave AU the lead for
good, at 20-15, with AU closing the set by scoring five of the
final eight points.
Anderson will square off against perennial regional powerhouse
Wingate on Saturday. First-serve versus the Bulldogs is slated for
2 p.m. at the Abney Center.
