BREVARD, N.C. - Errors proved costly to the Trojans, as the
Anderson volleyball team dropped a four-set, 3-1 (20-25, 27-25,
13-25, 20-25) decision to Brevard in South Atlantic Conference
action Friday night at Boshamer Gymnasium.
Anderson (10-13, 8-9 SAC) ) equaled a season-high with 28 attack
errors, while falling to the Tornados for the first time since the
2012 season and just the second time in 13 matchups between the two
schools, while Brevard (10-13, 7-10 SAC) earned a split of the
season series, while avenging an earlier loss to the
Trojans.
Sophomore Marissa Mitter, who was coming off a 13-kill
performance three nights ago against Newberry, narrowly missed her
second double-double of the season with a team-high 15 kills and
added nine digs. Sophomore Serena Jackson reached double-figure
kills for the 10th time this season with 10 on the night, while
redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry notched her fourth straight
double-double and 11th of the season, with 35 assists and 18 digs.
Freshman Emily Conard tallied 15 digs, while fellow freshman Jayln
Knight added 14 digs and three service aces.
The Trojans hit an impressive .333 in the opening set, but
Brevard was even more impressive, as the Tornados committed just
three errors in 26 attempts for a .423 attacking accuracy in the
first frame. Brevard jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage and never
trailed en route to the five-point win. Anderson cut the deficit to
just two, at 16-14, when Mitter and Jessica Harris combined for a
block, but the Tornados countered with a 5-2 surge to build a
five-point cushion and held the margin the rest of the way.
Anderson overcame a pair of early attack errors in the second
set to claim a 6-3 lead on one of three kills on the night from
Irizarry, but Brevard responded by scoring seven unanswered points
as part of a 10-4 outburst, as the Tornados staked a 13-8 lead.
Trailing by five, at 16-11, the Trojans refused to surrender, as
they answered with a 12-6 run to take a 23-22 edge on a miscue by
the Tornados. Knight followed with a kill to move the Trojans to
set point, but following a timeout, Brevard countered with three
consecutive points to take a 25-24 lead of its own, before Jackson
knotted the score with a kill and Mitter followed with her sixth
kill of the set. Knight then sealed the victory with an ace.
The Trojans were held to a -.065 hitting percentage in the third
frame, as Brevard jumped out to an 11-2 advantage and later opened
a double-digit lead at 14-4, with the Tornados holding the margin
for the 12-point win.
Knight opened the fourth set with another ace, with Allison
Gaminde following by knocking down a kill to give AU an early lead.
But the Tornados answered with an 11-4 scoring outburst to take an
advantage they would not relinquish. Knight's third ace of the
contest later trimmed BC's lead to just 13-11, but the Tornados
again pushed out to a 17-11 lead. Sophomore Mallory McFerron's
second kill of the match trimmed Brevard's cushion to 23-20 late,
but AU was unable to overtake the Tornados, who closed the match
with back-to-back kills.
Anderson will get back on the court quickly, as the Trojans
visit Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday for a rare 11 a.m.
first-serve.
