CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Paced by junior Jennifer Monroe's second
straight double-double, Anderson University women's basketball made
the most of being on the national stage with a 66-53 road victory
in South Atlantic Conference action on CBS Sports Network Saturday
afternoon at Curry Arena.
The win marks the Trojans' sixth in a row, matching the longest
winning streak in the two seasons under head coach Jimmy Garrity,
as AU improves to 13-3 overall with a 10-2 mark in conference play.
The Royals, who hosted their first-ever nationally televised game
in the school's history, fall to 5-12 on the season with a 3-9
record in the SAC.
Monroe led the Black and Gold with a career-high 19 points with
11 rebounds, headlined by an 8-for-13 performance from the field.
In Monroe's 11 rebounds, seven came on the offensive end, totaling
three more offensive rebounds by the entire Royal lineup. Following
the junior, also scoring in double figures, was classmate Jasmine
Franklin with 10 points while pulling down five rebounds. The
Trojan tandem led to AU out-rebounding its opponent for the sixth
straight game, 36-27.
Queens' duo of substitutes Carmen Richardson and Lacey
Singletary combined for 37 of the team's 53 points (69.9 percent),
as Richardson tallied a game-high 25 points. The Royals shot
20-for-42 (47.6 percent) from the field, but converted on just
1-of-4 from behind the 3-point line.
The Trojans opened up the contest quickly, out-scoring the
Royals 11-2 in the first four minutes. Monroe fueled the
game-opening run with four points, while four different Trojans
found the scoring column in the spurt. Anderson continued to add to
its lead with junior Madison Floyd scoring the team's next five
points, headlined by the team's first trey, sending the score to
16-2.
The Black and Gold maintained their double-figure lead for the
next five minutes until Singletary brought the Royals within eight
with a jumper at the 7:54 mark. The jumper was in the middle of a
brief 6-0 run for the home side, which would cut the deficit to six
with 7:25 remaining.
Within single figures, Queens began to chip away at the Anderson
advantage and brought the score within two at the two-minute mark
when Erin Brundage put in a jumper for two of her eventual five
points. Not to be out-done, Anderson's Heather Jankowy answered
with her lone 3-pointer of the game, increasing the Trojan lead to
five with a minute left.
Richardson responded on the ensuing possession and set the
halftime score at 29-26 with a jumper.
After the teams traded baskets in the early part of the second
half, senior sharpshooter Lesley Woods tallied her first trey of
the game which would put the Trojans ahead by eight at 36-28. Woods
would continue the 3-point trend and put Anderson ahead by nine at
41-32 with just under 15 minutes left.
Moments later, Monroe put AU ahead by nine once more with a
jumper with 13:13 remaining, but the Royals answered with six
straight points, capped off by a Richardson drive and a lay-in to
cut the Queens deficit to three at 43-40. Looking like the momentum
was about to flip, sophomore guard Nakia Young converted a
traditional three-point play on a lay-in to put AU back up by
six.
The Royals continued their attempt at a comeback, bringing the
score within one in the next three minutes, but could not take a
lead. With the score at 50-49, Anderson went on a 10-0 run over the
next four minutes and held a convincing 60-49 lead with four
minutes left. Four different Trojans scored in the run, as Monroe
tallied two field goals for a key four points.
Queens would not come closer than within nine points for the
remainder of the contest, as Anderson out-scored the home side 6-2
in the final three minutes to seal the victory.
The win was the program's first triumph in their first
appearance on national television. The victory also gave Garrity
his first victory in the Queen City after falling in the regular
season finale at Queens last season.
Anderson closes out a brief two-game road stretch on Wednesday
when it travels to Carson-Newman. Tip-off from the Volunteer State
is slated for 6 p.m.
