ANDERSON, S.C. - After what looked like a 1-1 draw was looming
on the horizon, visiting Queens found its golden goal with just 8.5
seconds remaining on the clock, snapping Anderson University men's
soccer's three-match winning streak with a 2-1 double-overtime
victory Wednesday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
With the setback, the Trojans fall to an even 3-3 on the year
and drop their first match in the South Atlantic Conference, moving
to 2-1. Queens, which knocked off the Trojans twice in 2013 capped
off by a tournament championship win, improves to 2-5 overall and a
matching 2-1 mark in the league.
Anderson doubled up the visitors in shots for the afternoon, as
it finished with 18 shots while six shots came on goal. After
regulation, the Trojans controlled the shot category 17-6, despite
Queens getting off three combined shots for both overtime periods,
compared to AU's one. Andre Carle, Magnus Larsen and Andres Lozano
led the Trojan offense with three shots apiece, while sophomore
Brad Du Plooy added two.
In the 18th minute, Carle handed Anderson its first lead of the
contest as Lozano crossed a pass into the Queens box where Royal
goalkeeper Montrell Morgan attempted to catch the ball in the air.
Unable to find a grip, the ball bounced out of Morgan's gloves and
found the feet of Carle. From there, Carle tipped a shot into the
back of the net for his third goal of the year. On the goal, Lozano
earned his first point in a Black and Gold uniform.
Queens, the defending conference regular season and tournament
champion, came storming back in the 28th minute when it was awarded
a corner kick. Marc-Kevin Schwenk sent a cross from the far-side
and found teammate Ryan King inside the box. King pushed a shot
past AU goalkeeper Bo Haug on his left side to even the score at
1-1. For King, the goal was his first of the year.
The teams played out the remaining 62 minutes of regulation
without a game-winner, as the clubs went into overtime for the
second straight regular season match between the teams. In 2013,
the teams needed one extra period before the Royals sealed the win
with a 100th minute goal.
In extra time, the visitors began to find openings in the
Anderson defense, as they tallied two shots in the first overtime
period, but came up short finding their game-winner. In the final
10 minutes, Queens found its golden goal from Ryan Ejezie who
lobbed a shot over Haug's head for the game-ender with seconds
remaining.
With the setback, the Trojans are 0-3 against Queens since it
became SAC members prior to the start of the 2013 campaign. Last
season, the Royals snapped a streak of three straight SAC
Tournament championships by Anderson with a 2-0 win.
Anderson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts SAC rival
Mars Hill. Kickoff from Trojan Stadium is scheduled for 3:30
p.m.
