ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University volleyball team opened
a four-match homestand with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20) sweep of
Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action Tuesday night at the
Abney Athletic Center.
"This was a great win for the team tonight," said Anderson head
coach Craig Mosqueda. "We had to make some lineup changes and the
team did a great job of adjusting. We did a great job sticking to
the game plan, we served tough and played amazing defense. It was
definitely a good confidence booster going into this weekend with a
new lineup."
Anderson (13-4, 6-3 SAC) notched its 10th sweep of the season
and has won four of its last five, while Newberry (9-8, 3-6 SAC)
saw its win streak halted at two.
Senior Hailey Pittman led all players with 14 kills, while
fellow senior Shannon Gillespie added nine kills, five digs and
three block assists. Sophomore Tinsley Hallman knocked down a
season-high nine kills and recorded five digs and a pair of service
aces. Sophomore Priscilla Irizarry handed out a match-best 32
assists, just two shy of her season-best tally of 34 reached in
mid-September. Senior Alix Hooker recorded 15 digs for her 11th
double-figure effort of the season.
Outside hitter Logan Hayward led the Newberry attack with nine
kills, while senior libero Elayni Stokes recorded 19 digs.
The Trojans trailed just three times in the opening set, jumping
out to an early 7-3 advantage by capitalizing on the Wolves'
miscues. Trailing, 11-10, Pittman fueled an 11-3 outburst that saw
the Trojans break the set open. The 5-foot-11 middle blocker
notched four kills during the surge, with Gillespie adding two
kills and freshman Kendall Vallancourt notching a kill and an ace.
Newberry closed within 24-21 late, but Pittman knocked down her
sixth kill to give AU the win.
Leading the second set, 12-10, Anderson used a 7-3 run to gain
separation from the Wolves, as Hallman sandwiched a pair of kills
around a service ace by Hooker to set the stage. Following a
timeout by the Wolves, Pittman recorded three kills in the run to
give AU a 19-13 cushion. Newberry again made a late run, closing
within 23-19 before committing an error and Hallman claimed the set
with a kill.
The third set was tied three times early in the frame before the
Trojans claimed a lead they would not relinquish on back-to-back
kills from Hallman and sophomore Jessica Harris. After AU built a
16-10 advantage with Hallman serving, the Wolves trimmed the Trojan
lead to three on four occasions before closing within 21-19 on a
Hayward kill. With the Trojans clinging to a 22-20 edge, Pittman
recorded a kill and AU claimed the match on back-to-back errors by
the Wolves.
Anderson continues the homestand by welcoming Carson-Newman to
the Abney Center for a 7 p.m. first-serve on Friday.
