NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Anderson volleyball team wrapped up its
regular-season road schedule by outpacing Newberry, 3-1 (25-22,
21-25, 25-20, 25-20) in South Atlantic Conference action Tuesday
night at Eleazer Arena.
"It was a great win for the team tonight," said Anderson head
coach Craig Mosqueda. "In sets one and two we struggled a bit with
unforced errors but then we got things rolling. Hailey (Pittman),
Shannon (Gillespie) and Tinsley (Hallman) were solid on offense and
overall the team played great defense."
Anderson (14-12, 13-7 SAC), which entered the match in a
three-way deadlock for the third spot in the league standings,
swept the season series with Newberry, which fell to 17-10 overall
and 11-9 in the conference with their second loss in three
outings.
Neither team was able to build more than a seven-point lead
throughout the evenly-played, back-and-forth match.
The opening set featured 13 ties and nine lead changes, with
neither team able to build more than a three-point advantage
throughout the frame. The Trojans pushed out to a 12-9 lead, as AU
capitalized on a pair of Newberry errors and a kill by junior
middle blocker Hailey Pittman, but Newberry posted three
consecutive points to knot the score for the fifth time of the set.
With the score even at 22 apiece, Anderson reeled off three
unanswered points to claim the set, as the Trojans again took
advantage of a pair of Wolves' errors sandwiched around a kill by
junior outside hitter Shannon Gillespie.
Newberry countered by scoring the first three points of the
second set en route to taking a 5-1 lead, but the Trojans battled
back to even the score at six apiece on the strength of a 5-1
outburst with junior Kelley Lacey serving. Newberry regained the
advantage with a 5-2 surge, but the Trojans closed the gap and took
a brief 16-15 edge on another Newberry miscue. Newberry snapped the
ninth tie (19-19) of the set with two straight points and AU was
unable to overtake the Wolves, as Newberry closed the frame with a
6-2 run.
The Trojans showed their resilience by bouncing back in the
third set, as the frame featured 13 ties, but it was AU's turn to
post the late surge. After trailing by three, the Trojans battled
back to even the score at 19-19, and finished the set with a 6-1
outburst. Newberry committed three errors and Pittman added a pair
of kills, including the set-deciding kill.
Anderson steadily built an 18-11 cushion in the fourth and final
set, marking the largest lead by either team on the night. With the
Trojans leading 21-14, Newberry posted a 6-1 run to climb within
two, but would get no closer, as Pittman notched back-to-back kills
and redshirt freshman Priscilla Irizarry closed the match with an
ace.
Pittman shared match-high kill honors with 18, while adding five
digs and three total blocks. Gillespie notched her 19th
double-double of the season with 17 kills and 17 digs, while setter
Meghan Cautero dished out 52 assists. Junior Alix Hooker Alix
Hooker recorded 25 digs, while Irizarry tallied 20 and Lacey
notched 10.
Anderson, which is already guaranteed a spot in the SAC
Tournament, will close the regular season with a three-match
homestand, beginning with Catawba on Friday. First-serve versus the
Indians is slated for 7 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
