GAFFNEY, S.C - Sophomore outside hitter Shannon Gillespie posted
a pair of double-doubles to help lead the Anderson University
volleyball team to two wins on the final day of action at the
Limestone College Classic, as the Trojans defeated Brenau, 3-1
(25-22, 17-25, 25-13, 25-20) and Limestone, 3-1 (24-26, 25-13,
25-23, 25-20) Saturday at the Timken Center.
Anderson stayed perfect on the young season, moving to 3-0,
while Brenau slipped to 3-1 and the host Saints dropped to
0-3.
The Trojans posted a .290 attack percentage in the opening set
versus Brenau, while capitalizing on eight errors by the Golden
Tigers. AU rallied from an 11-10 deficit to claim a 21-16
advantage, its largest of the first set. Brenau battled back to
even the score at 22 apiece before the Trojans closed the set with
three straight points on a pair of Golden Tiger errors sandwiched
around an ace from sophomore Meghan Cautero.
Brenau never trailed in the second set, scoring the first seven
points of the frame before AU climbed within 12-10 on a kill from
Gillespie. The Golden Tigers pushed back out to a 19-14 advantage
and built a six-point cushion twice before settling on the
eight-point victory, as Anderson hit just .077.
The Trojans bounced back in the third frame for a convincing
win, building a 13-5 lead and forcing a timeout by the Golden
Tigers. But the break didn't slow the Trojan attack, as Anderson
pushed out to a double-digit advantage, at 21-11, and closed out
the set by claiming five of the final six points, including a pair
of aces by sophomore Alix Hooker.
Anderson snapped a 16-16 tie in the fourth and final set by
reeling off three unanswered points and held off the Golden Tigers
down the stretch.
The host Saints claimed a narrow win in the opening set of AU's
final match of the tourney, rallying from a 16-12 deficit to claim
a late lead at 19-18. Anderson answered to even the score at 20
apiece and the score was knotted four more times before Limestone
took the final two points of the set.
But the Trojans bounced back to win the final three sets,
beginning with another convincing second-set victory. AU took
advantage of Saints' errors to bolt out to an 11-4 lead and never
looked back.
Limestone jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage in the third
set, but the Trojans refused to go away, chipping away to
eventually tie the score at 20-20 and took their first lead at
23-22 on a kill by Hailey Pittman.
The Trojans snapped an 11-11 tie in the fourth set with a 7-2
run to push out to a five-point edge with Pittman notching three
kills during the outburst. AU went on to build a seven-point lead
and closed the set on a kill by Cautero.
On the afternoon, Gillespie came up with 32 digs defensively and
recorded 21 kills, while Pittman notched a team-high 23 kills and
is now boasting a stellar .508 attack percentage on the young
season, with just three errors in 63 attempts. Senior Tiffany Rowe,
one of the most prolific middle blockers in school history, added
eight blocks and 15 kills. Freshman Victoria Wehrmann posted 14
total kills, while Cautero handed out 72 assists on the day.
Sophomores Alix Hooker and Kelley Lacey notched 27 and 20 digs,
respectively.
Anderson is idle until hosting the two-day AU Invitational that
begins on Friday, with the Trojans facing Limestone and Belmont
Abbey on the first day of action at the Abney Athletic
Center.
