MARS HILL, N.C. -
In a battle between regionally-ranked teams, No. 21 Anderson
outpaced Mars Hill, 1-0, in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer
action Sunday afternoon at Meares Stadium.
Anderson (9-2, 4-0
SAC), the third-ranked team in the Southeast Region, extended its
win streak to seven matches - which equals last season's as the
longest in school history - and has won nine of its last 10
contests, while Mars Hill (7-4, 4-2 SAC), ranked fourth in the
Southeast Region, suffered its second consecutive setback after
winning four in a row.
With the win, the
Trojans kept pace with Lincoln Memorial (4-0) and Tusculum (3-0) as
the only undefeated teams in league play, while the Lions slipped
into fourth place in the SAC standings.
The defensive
struggle saw the two teams combine for just six shots in the first
half, but the Trojans capitalized early on an own goal by the Lions
as the ball ricocheted off Mars Hill defender Cody Langley and
settled in the Lions' net less than 12 minutes into the
contest.
Mars Hill outshot the Trojans, 12-6,
while holding a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Zac Scott played all 90
minutes in goal for MHC and made three saves. AU's Lukas Hesse
earned the win, also playing the entire match in the net for the
Trojans and recording two saves.
Anderson closes
out its four-match road swing Wednesday with a conference matchup
at Brevard. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the BC Soccer
Field.
