ANDERSON, S.C. - Led by junior Lassse Sohrweide's two first half
goals, Anderson blanked Young Harris College, 6-0, in men's soccer
action Thursday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
Anderson (3-2-1) wrapped up a brief two-match homestand by
posting a season-high six scores and earned its second shutout on
the season. The last time AU notched six goals in a contest was in
a 6-0 shutout of Barton College on Sept.19, 2009, while Young
Harris fell to 0-3-3 on the season.
"I was pleased with the result," said Anderson head coach Rob
Miller. "It felt good offensively and we finally looked like
ourselves out there. We came to play today."
The Trojans' early pressure paid off as junior Ryan Messick got
Anderson on the scoreboard in the eighth minute when the 5-9
midfielder lofted a shot from the left corner of the box that got
over the outstretched hands of YHC keeper Wezley Barnard.
Sohrweide followed at the 14:17 mark with the first of his two
goals, as senior Zach Denson worked the middle of the field and
found the 6-0 midfielder on the left side. Sohrweide moved to his
left and took a sharp angle with his left-footed kick that found
the back of the net.
The preseason all-conference selection recorded his second score
of the afternoon in the 28th minute by lifting a shot that sailed
into the goal just under the crossbar, giving the Trojans a 3-0
lead.
The offensive outburst continued with senior Mark Smith
collecting his second goal of the season just 45 seconds later by
ripping a shot just inside the left post and AU wrapped up the
first-half scoring in the 37th minute when Messick found sophomore
forward Clement Samson for his first goal of the season with his
shot from the top of the box.
Sohrweide and Denson teamed up again 15 minutes into the second
half, this time with Denson tallying the score as he took the feed
from Sohrweide just a few yards in front of the goal and placed the
ball in the net for his first score of the year.
The Trojans outshot YHC, 17-6, including 10-2 in the decisive
first half and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore keeper Lukas Hesse collected three saves en route to
earning his third win and second shutout of the season.
Anderson opens South Atlantic Conference action on Sunday when
the Trojans visit Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday, with kick-off slated is
scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
