ANDERSON, S.C. - The second-seeded Anderson women's basketball
team overcame a sluggish start and outran fourth-seeded Queens by a
score of 62-52 to win the Conference Carolinas Tournament
championship Saturday night at the Abney Athletic Center. Anderson
(20-10) has won its last five contests and 10 of its last 11 as the
Trojans earned their second straight tournament title and its
seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, while Queens had
won six in a row and eight of its last nine and wrapped its
campaign at 18-12. Both teams struggled to find the basket in the
early going, as they combined for just four free throws and one
field goal in the opening four minutes of the game, as the Trojans
were connecting on 16.7 percent of its shots and Queens only 14.3
percent. Junior guard Ashley Abed gave the lead to Anderson with
two from the line and the Trojans held the advantage for the rest
of the game, using hot shooting from behind the three-point arc,
converting on 8-19 (42.0%), to maintain a lead over Queens, which
was usually accurate from beyond the arc this season. The Lady
Royals were just 1-for-12 from long-range tonight. Abed's two free
throws sparked an 11-2 Anderson run over a five-minute span early
in the game, with Lauren Beeson staking AU to its largest lead of
the first half, 24-8, on a 3-pointer from the right corner. But the
No. 4 seed Royals chipped away and pulled within five, at 24-19, by
reeling off 11 unanswered points. Anderson countered with a 7-4 run
to close the half to lead by eight, 31-23. Anderson used a 10-4 run
midway through the second stanza to widen the lead to 15, but
Queens did not go quietly, hitting six of their last 13 tries in an
attempt to reel the Trojans back in , but was able to get as close
as 60-52 with just 18 seconds remaining. Queens' Marissa Hudley led
all scorers with 18 points and collected 10 rebounds, while
teammate Shakaria Hamlin added 17 points. Guard Shanice Wilson
paced a balanced Anderson attack with 13 points, with Alexa Neal
dishing out a game-high eight assists. Alexa Neal and Amanda Parris
