ANDERSON, S.C. - A balanced offensive attack lifted
league-leading Wingate to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16) win past
Anderson in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Saturday
afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs, who had already clinched the top seed in next
week's league tournament, improved to 25-1 and went undefeated in
the league at 18-0, while Anderson (18-14, 8-10 SAC) earned the
sixth seed in their inaugural season in the SAC and will face
third-seeded Lincoln Memorial in Friday's quarterfinals.
The final regular-season contest for both teams saw the Bulldogs
break open an evenly-played first set midway through the frame and
held off the Trojans with senior outside hitter Lauren Billo
serving for four of the final four Wingate points.
Anderson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second set, but
the Bulldogs rallied to knot the score at 10-10 and took a brief
14-13 edge before AU capitalized on a service error to tie the set
at 14 apiece.
Bulldog senior Rebecca Bloemer's kill gave Wingate it lead it
would not relinquish at 15-14 and held off the Trojans after AU
climbed back within one again at 17-16, behind an 8-2 run to close
the set.
Wingate gained an early lead in the final set and pushed out to
a 19-10 lead, its largest of the contest on the strength of a .361
attack percentage.
Bloemer and freshman Cori McGowan shared match-high honors in
kills with 11 apiece, while WU senior Stormi Gale notched a
double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Junior setter Liz Willis
handed out 37 assists and freshman Katie Handy added 13 digs for
the visitors.
The Trojans were led by senior Jamie Lancaster's seven kills.
The Fountain Inn, S.C. native overtook former Trojan standout
Amanda "Tex" Edwards in the school record books with her first kill
of the afternoon - on the match's first point. Lindsay Doggett, who
now owns the school record for assists, handed out a team-high 24
against the Bulldogs, while Adria Mullaney came up with a
match-high 22 digs.
The SAC Tournament runs Friday through Sunday and will be hosted
by Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. AU and LMU will square off at
7:30 p.m. The Trojans will be looking to reverse their
regular-season fortunes, as Lincoln Memorial swept the season
series with AU by counts of 3-0 and 3-1.
